Approaches Influencing My Work

Psychodynamic Approach

Explores how relational experiences during early development impacts present relationships and how patterns can be repeated. As an Integrative Psychodynamic Counsellor I use myself in the process to explore feelings/emotions that might emerge in the moment, and can reflect relationships outside of therapy. This can be used as a way of enhancing awareness of patterns of relating, to make desired change, and improve relationships.

Transactional Analysis

This approach compliments the psychodynamic way of working through exploring how beliefs about the world, otherwise known as 'script' are formed in childhood and how what we are told influences adult relationships - freeing yourself from old mantras that can leave you feeling stuck in fixed patterns of relating.

Person-Centred Approach

Focuses on the provision of the necessary and sufficient conditions for human growth and potential, the most well known being ‘empathy, acceptance and unconditional positive regard’. The person-centred approach also emphasises our tendency as individuals to move towards actualisation - fulfilling ones potential.

I draw on this approach with your individual goals, values, and culture in mind.

Neurobiological Theory

Currently at the forefront of research, is proving how the brain is shaped and moulded from early infancy and how damage caused during this crucial period in development, can be repaired through the process of therapy; using evidence of the experience dependant nature of the brain. The therapeutic relationship has the potential to crate new synaptic connections and neural pathways in the brain.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

CBT is a therapeutic approach that can be used to re-structure ways thinking, taking into consideration thoughts affect the way you feel and impacts behaviour. I integrate use of grounding and mindfulness techniques, especially useful for distressing feelings.

Existential Approach

This is a philosophical approach that aims to explore the meanings that we create in our lives; focusing on freedom, choice and responsibility. Anxiety experienced through the human condition and process of being in the world can be difficult to grapple with - therapy can be used to help with you sit with and cope with uncertainty that may emerge at different points in life.
